Groupo Malespin with SKY Energy International, Inc. installed a twenty-five kW photovoltaic solar system last month in an attempt to combat the extremely high cost of electricity affecting the Dominican Republic. The power sector in the Dominican Republic has traditionally been, and still is, a bottleneck to the country's economic growth.

A prolonged electricity crisis and ineffective remedial measures have led to a vicious cycle of regular blackouts, high operating costs of the distribution companies, large losses including electricity theft through illegal connections, high retail tariffs to cover these inefficiencies, low bill collection rates, a significant fiscal burden for the government through direct and indirect subsidies, and very high costs for consumers as many of them have to rely on expensive alternative self-generated electricity. According to the World Bank, the revitalization of the Dominican economy depends greatly on a sound reform of the sector. (1) (2)

The firm plans on working closely with SKY energy to continue to develop the Solar market throughout the DR.

MALESPIN CONSTRUCTORA, S.A. and the system are located at Calle 20 casi esquina B. Villa Aura, Manoguayabo, Santo Domingo, Rep.Dominicana Teléfono (809) 561-1563 Fax (809) 561-3982mp.

Jamaica Insulation & Duct Works completed the installation of an 11 kW photovoltaic system on Tuesday, August 11 in

an effort to address high energy costs cutting into the manufacturer's bottom line. The system was engineered and

installed by Sky Energy with  assistance provided by Jamaica Insulation & Duct Works (JIDW).

This was SKY Energy’s first project on

the island. SKY handled importation,

installation and testing of the system,

while JIDW provided an electrician,

scaffolding and some on-site labor.

During the process SKY discovered a

great deal concerning the Jamaican

market. Overall the install ran

smoothly,  on schedule and budget.

The inverters which are manufactured in

Kassel, Germany at the SMA headquarters

convert solar energy to electricity at Jamaica

 Insulation & Duct Works.
